On December 10th, 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights was approved.

Article 1 says: All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

Would like to mention here a great article written by Daniele Archibugi, professor of innovation, governance and public policy at Birkbeck college, university of London, that's how it begins:

As the time comes to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the West has lost its moral authority and seems incapable of offering any hope of future dignity to the rest of the world. Guantanamo, 'extraordinary rendition' and Abu Ghraib will be just some of the words launched in the face of the West to deny its self-assigned role as the champion of human rights.
